NE chamber awards scholarships

The Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Foundation last week distributed scholarships to 10 local students.

Each student received $1,100 and was honored at a dinner at Glen Foerd on the Delaware.

The money is raised through three events that take place at Knowlton Mansion. The foundation hosts a culinary event, Hail to the Chefs, in the spring, and WomenForward holds a luncheon in June and a tea party in December.

The contest is open to students who live in the Northeast. They fill out an application and are judged on grades and references.

This year’s winners are Christine Benner (East Stroudsburg University); Aaron Horwitz (a Fasman Yeshiva High School graduate who’ll attend Yeshiva University in Israel); Christine Kirlin (Widener University School of Law); Kelly Kirlin (Peirce College); William Lawrence (Temple); Aron Litostanski (a Franklin Towne Charter High School graduate headed to Temple); Megan Montgomery (a St. Hubert graduate going to the University of Delaware); Nicholas Pables (a Father Judge graduate who’ll attend King’s College); Rivka Leah Horwitz (Touro College in New York); and Joseph McHugh (Temple’s Fox School of Business).

The foundation has provided 35 scholarships since the program was established in 2007.

Al Taubenberger serves as president of the Chamber and the foundation. Rose McMenamin is chairwoman of the foundation. Collette McBratney directs WomenForward.
